A land of sport, nature, wellness, and significant events for all ages, Valdidentro is the ideal destination for varied, alternative, and exciting experiences.
Located at the foot of the renowned Cima Piazzi glacier, within its 24,000 hectares that make it the largest municipality in the Province of Sondrio, it can boast environmental and scenic pearls of rare beauty, among which the Cancano Lakes stand out.
Territory
A stay of tranquillity and well-being, immersed in natural landscapes connected by a rich network of paths and mountain roads: the municipality of Valdidentro, the largest in the Province of Sondrio with its 244.2 square kilometers, is famous above all for its thermal waters, among which the Bagni Vecchi and Bagni Nuovi stand out.
Two valleys of extraordinary beauty are of great appeal: Cancano and Val Viola. The former constitutes a historic access point to the County of Bormio and, consequently, to Valtellina. Val Viola, on the other hand, is a true paradise for excursion lovers, both in summer with trekking and mountain biking and in winter with snowshoes and ski mountaineering.
History
Historical testimonies, restored places from the past, and religious buildings: Valdidentro is home to a wide and varied historical, artistic, and cultural heritage.
Framed by the majestic Alps, Valdidentro boasts a history that spans centuries. With ancient roots, the region was a crucial access point to the County of Bormio, defended by the imposing Fraele Towers, which still tell the story of times of battles and defenses. The 'Stairs of Fraele' represents a unique testimony of medieval construction techniques, with steps carved into the rock telling stories of daring crossings.
The county of Bormio, already in existence during the French Revolution, consisted of Bormio and its five valleys. One was the Interior Valley (today's Valdidentro), divided into the Valle di Premadio and the Valle di Pedenosso.
Culture
It is a place steeped in culture that manifests through a rich historical, artistic, and traditional heritage: the numerous churches scattered throughout the territory constitute fundamental elements of the local heritage, harmoniously integrated into the cultural and landscape context. A journey through these places offers a compelling experience amidst historical evidence and evocative views that tell stories of a fascinating past.
Alongside the production of hydroelectric energy, with the 'Rasin' and 'Fraele' power stations, ironworking was a major resource for centuries: the Premadio ironworks, built in 1852, known as 'Ferriere Corneliani', still represents a notable example of industrial archaeology in Alta Valtellina.
Sport
A land of sport all year round: from cross-country and downhill skiing in winter to exciting trails in summer, embracing the energy of nature.
In Valdidentro, sport blends harmoniously with the majesty of the Alps, creating an environment that stimulates energy and passion for physical activity. The Cima Piazzi Happy Mountain ski area winks at young skiers with its easy ski slopes suitable for the whole family.
The renowned Pista Viola for Nordic skiing and the adjoining biathlon polygon make Valdidentro a pearl for winter sports and high-altitude training. Summer reveals an equally dynamic sporting side, with trekking and mountain biking trails through unique landscapes. Cycling enthusiasts find fertile ground for exciting challenges, such as the prestigious Alta Valtellina Bike Marathon event.
Sport becomes an immersive experience where natural beauty and physical activity combine to create a unique combination.
