The church of St. Gallen

One of the most striking churches in Alta Valtellina, the Church of St. Gallen dominates the green plain between Bormio and Premadio

One of the area's most striking and majestic places of worship, the Church of St. Gallen still hides its origins in a veil of mystery. The date of its foundation and original function remains unknown. However, the most accredited hypotheses suggest that it may have served as a refuge for wayfarers along the royal road to Fraele or, perhaps, as a fortified complex or monastery on a smaller scale. The dedication to St Gallen, an Irishman whose veneration was introduced in the Bormina region by the concession of Charlemagne in 775, suggests an early medieval origin.

The first documented mention of the Church of St. Gallen dates back to 1243 when its remoteness and harsh winter conditions prompted the inhabitants to request that it be elevated to an independent parish.

Having become independent in 1467, the church underwent its first extension in August 1480, followed by its consecration by the Bishop of Como, Branda Castiglioni. In 1482, at the suggestion of the Franciscan Gherardo Da Casate of Monza, the interior was frescoed with magnificent life-size representations of Saints Francis, Anthony Abbot, and Blessed Simonino.

The two side altars dedicated to St Charles Borromeo and the Blessed Virgin, later to the Confraternity of Disciples, were demolished by Bishop Feliciano Ninguarda during his apostolic visit in 1614.

Unfortunately, the imposing 17th-century wooden ciborium of the central altar was lost after the church lost its parish status in 1833 due to neglect.

Despite this, the majesty of its structure and its long history make it a cultural and religious heritage of inestimable value. It is capable of transporting anyone on a journey through time, through the various spiritual nuances that have taken place over the centuries.

The church is only open and accessible to the public during the usual religious celebrations or guided tours organized by the Valdidentro Tourist Office during the summer.
