Mountain roads, as agro-sylvo-pastoral roads, are subject to specific regulations governing how they can be accessed.
Valdidentro Tourism
The side valleys in the municipality of Valdidentro (Cancano, Val Viola and Val Lia) are currently accessible.
To access these valleys, you must always purchase a day pass costing €5.00 per vehicle, which is valid for both access and parking.
Tickets to enter Cancano can be purchased online or from the ticket machines located along the access roads. The machines accept coins, banknotes and credit cards, but do not give change.
Tickets for entry to Val Viola can only be purchased from the ticket machines located along the access routes. The machines accept coins, banknotes and credit cards, but do not give change.
As regards Val Lia, as there are a rather limited number of parking spaces, you must have a ticket to access the car parks; these can be purchased online or at the Valdidentro Tourist Office during opening hours (including on the days leading up to your visit).
The ticket must be displayed clearly on the vehicle’s dashboard, both whilst driving and whilst parked (for motorbikes, there is no obligation to display the ticket, but it must be carried with you).
Please note that these roads are not accessible to motorhomes and caravans.
During July and August, multi-day permits for access to Val Viola are issued solely on the basis of the actual availability of parking spaces.
In the morning, they can be purchased directly on site, at the physical sales point near the Val Viola information point.
In the afternoon, when some places tend to become available, they may be requested from the bike hire shop in Arnoga, which is open until 18:00, or from the Valdidentro Tourist Office for the same day, subject to availability.
A multi-day permit does not constitute an advance, guaranteed booking of a parking space.

Unlike in previous years, the traffic regulations along the Giro dei Laghi di Cancano will not come into force at the same time as the other restrictions in Val Viola and Val Lia. This is an exceptional measure applicable solely for 2026, made necessary by the works still underway on the bridge situated near the entrance to Val Alpisella, along the San Giacomo dam.
The Cancano Express service will also be available, departing at 09:30 from Piazza IV Novembre in Isolaccia and returning from Cancano at 17:40. The service will not run on 27 and 30 August. A second additional service will run during the week of 8–16 August, departing at 10.30 and returning at 18.40 from Cancano.

With regard to the Cancano area, the following two restrictions should be noted.

1) Due to ongoing work to rebuild the bridge in S. Giacomo, until the work is completed, when you reach the start of the second retaining wall:
2) Please be advised that the Alpisella path on the Livigno side is temporarily closed, following a small landslide along the route.

When the road is open and passable, Val Viola can be accessed as far as the P4 car park in the “Altumeira” area, subject to availability.
Please note that parking spaces along the access road and at P4 Altumeira are limited. Access by vehicle is therefore always subject to the actual availability of parking spaces.
To facilitate better management of visitor numbers during peak periods, in July and August, multi-day parking permits for Val Viola are issued solely on the basis of actual availability of spaces and do not allow for advance booking of parking spaces.
On 4–5, 11–12 and 18–19 July, and every day from 25 July to 30 August, Val Viola is served by a shuttle service that allows visitors to reach P4 Altumeira from Arnoga without using a car.
We particularly recommend using the shuttle bus on days when visitor numbers are high, given the limited capacity of the car parks available in the valley.

From 4 July to 30 August, there will be a restriction prohibiting entry onto the Val Viola road between 11.30 and 18.00, with the exception of residents and property owners holding a valid permit, and holders of multi-day permits.

The Cancano Valley has ample car parks, which are numbered and clearly signposted, situated mainly along the stretch between the Torri di Fraele and the entrance to the Cancano dam.
In Val Viola, as well as the car park at Altumeira, there are other car parks along the access road, but they have very limited capacity. If these spaces are not available, you can leave your car in the car park near Baita Viola, at the entrance to the valley, or above the Albergo Viola.
Val Lia has a number of fairly small car parks (Praolin, Prada Benedida and Prescedont) along the access road, and a larger one in the area known as ‘Plan de li Astela’. The car park by the little church in Prescedont is not accessible between July and 30 August.
