The other churches

Throughout Valdidentro, there are many other churches, no less critical, bearing witness to different historical periods, each with its own history and identity.

Church of St. Martin (Bagni Vecchi)

The church of San Martino ai Bagni di Bormio, mentioned in 1092, survived the demolition of 1201 and developed around the 12th century as an ancient xenodochium. Major reconstruction work was carried out in 1496, but in the 20th century, the structure was remodeled, losing the external entrance, ossuary, and cemetery.

Its simple rectangular architecture preserves fragments of 15th-century frescoes attributed to Giovannino da Sondalo and more recent paintings by Cipriano Valorsa dated 1564, visible in the apse basin.

Church of St John the Baptist (Molina)

The church of St John the Baptist in Molina, probably built in the last decade of the 14th century, retained the community's patronage until the Napoleonic decrees of the 19th century.

Facing east, symbolizing the Word rising to enlighten humanity, it was renovated in 1533, with the raising of the vault and the construction of the bell tower. Inside, a 17th-century altarpiece houses the statue of the Madonna and Child between St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist, the latter depicted with a cup and a viper, in a medieval symbolic interpretation linked to protection against evil.

Church of St Christopher and St Gallus (Premadio)

The church of San Cristoforo in Premadio, mentioned in 1397, today shows diversified architecture resulting from multiple transformations that almost entirely canceled the original medieval structure. The building was enlarged in the 17th century and restored in the 19th century to obtain parish dignity in 1844, resulting from those works. In former times, the façade housed the image of the patron saint Christopher, revered for his protection against sudden death.

The interior features two side altars dedicated to the Virgin Mary, examples of the counter-reformation that promoted Marian devotion and countered Protestant views.

Holy Trinity Church (Fior d'Alpe)

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Turripiano, the strictest testimony of the Counter-Reformation in Bormio, was erected in 1593 to counter the advance of Swiss Protestantism. Supervised by Bishop Feliciano Ninguarda, the interior paintings highlight theological scenes in contrast to the Reformed, while the Madonna's exterior image emphasizes the Roman Church's role.

Later, during an animal epidemic in 1743, the cult of St. Anthony Abbot took over, leading to the construction of a side chapel in his honor with an altar containing an ancient altarpiece and a painting of the saint.

Church of St. Anthony Abbot (S. Antonio - Pedenosso)

The Scianno cliff is shrouded in many legends about witches, gypsies, and unexplainable phenomena, which is why, in 1704, the church of S. Antonio Abate was erected to exorcise the place. Tradition attributes the rescue from an avalanche in 1886 to this saint, with the typically alpine building containing frescoes of the four Evangelists and the statue of the saint in the central altar.

Church of St. Anthony of Padua (Pradelle - Pedenosso)

The Church of St. Anthony of Padua in Pedenosso (locality of Pradelle) was inaugurated in 1999 to serve the growing local population, maintaining a symbolic link with an earlier destroyed church, commemorated by a painting preserved in the new structure. The modern construction features 13 stained glass windows representing the Litany of the Virgin Mary, a serpentine altar with a bronze sculpture, and sculptural works that visually converge towards the tabernacle containing the Light. In contrast, at the back of the clergy, a cross-shaped stained glass window supports a sculpture of the suffering Christ made of metal fragments.

Church of S. Maria Nascente (Isolaccia)

The church of S. Maria Nascente at Isolaccia, built in 1935 to replace the 16th-century one destroyed by fire in 1849, is dedicated to Mary, Rocco, and Sebastian for protection against the plague epidemic. Encaustic paintings by Turoldo Conconi from 1954 decorate the hierarchy, with representations of Mary's Ascension, the Nativity, and the Descent of the Holy Spirit, while various works of art, such as an altar by Cesare Rini and 18th-century paintings, enrich the interior. The statues of the water saints, covered and revealed only on special occasions, together with the Madonna, were the object of sincere veneration. Their story is told in the stained glass windows by Alberto Creppi.

Church of St. Abbondio (Semogo)

The history of the Church of St. Abbondio dates back to 1328, undergoing several restorations over the centuries, including one in 1490 after an indulgence granted by the Apostolic Visitor. Major renovations in 1624 and the 18th century gave shape to the present building, which was later enriched by the relics of the martyred saints Celestino, Paziente, Modesto, and Urbana, the so-called Saints of the Sun, donated in 1736 by Fra Giorgio di S. Bernardo of the Discalced Carmelites. 2004, it was renovated, and in 2008, it received an organ from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Michael in Weiden.

Church of St. Erasmo (Cancano)

The original church of S. Erasmo a Cancano, built in 1934 by the Milan Municipal Electricity Company to spiritually support the workers of the S. Giacomo dam, was later dismantled and rebuilt in 1961 next to the Solena refreshment area due to the construction of the new Cancano II reservoir.

Designed by architect Albino Preseni, it has a rich wrought-iron outer gate and inside, a painting of the Last Supper and a painting of Our Lady of the Shipyards. Every third Sunday in July, a Mass is celebrated in memory of those who died for the construction and defense of the hydroelectric plants in the Cancano and Fraele Valleys.

Church of St. James (Cancano)

The church of St. James consecrated in 1953, replaced the old building submerged by the Azienda Elettrica Municipale di Milano (AEM) dam. This original church, dating back to 1287, located near an old hospice along the Italian-Swiss border, was part of a network of stops for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Guests returning from Spain carried shells as a distinctive sign, similar to the one on the statue of St James in the new church. The Fraele road, traversed by merchants and horse riders, was also an important trade route linking Bormio to Austria and Bavaria, facilitating the transport of wine and rock salt.
